The signification of the other abbreviations used at the head of a memoir will be found in general detailed in the body of the memoir itself.

The ratings of A.B., Ordinary, L.M., Captain’s Servant, Lieutenant's Servant, &c., were often during the war nominally given to young gentlemen on entering the service, owing to there not being at the time vacancies for them among the Volunteers and Midshipmen.


The Full-pay and Half-pay are computed up to the year 1847.
