The Musalmans have always been noted for the tenacity with which they have clung to their own ideas and lan- guage, and for the obstinacy with which they have resisted foreign influence. The Persian, their great prop, has been shorn of its honors in India, and the Musalmans are averse to learn the Vernaculars ; hence, as the Urdu has been formed by a mixture of Persian and Hindi, so the Musulmans have formed in Bengal, a kind of lingua franca, a mixture of Bengali and Urdu, called the boatmen's language. This must eventually give way to the overwhelming influence of the Bengali, but in the mean time, as illustrative of tho phases of mind of the people, is appended a list of the principal books in this dialect, printed at Musulman presses in Calcutta, which have a wide circulation, and, particular-
