Sanders, Cones Co., pp. 166, 8 as. ; compiled originally for Fort William College, at the suggestion of Dr. Carey. It gives terms on the fol- lowing subjects : Theology, Physiology, Natural History, Do- mestic Economy in Bengali and the Romanised Bengali char- acter. ^ It also gives the names of plants used in the Materia Medica, and of useful trees and plants. The author was Assistant Librarian to Fort William College. 31. THEOLOGICAL TERMS, MILL'S VOCABU- LARY OF, B. C. P., pp. 36, Roz. & Co. Though Sanskrit, yet as the Theological terms in Bengali are drawn from the Sans- . krit, it is very useful in Bengali, there are valuable criticisms, in it, by Dr. Mill and Professor Wilson— it was written with a view to uniformity of Theological terms in translations of the Bible in the India languages. It gives the English, the ordinal words, remarks on its meanings, proposed rendering in Sanskrit. ETHICS, AND MOSAL TAXiSS. The first Ethical Work published was the Hitopadesh, in 1801, of which an expurgated edition by a native appeared in 1841. The same year came out the BatrUh Sinhasan. In 1803, Dr. Gilchrist published in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Brija Bhasha and Bengali, translations of jEsop's and other Fa- bles, all in the Romanized character, the Bengali was made by Tarini Charan Mittra. In 1820 came out Stewart's Upadesh Kathd or Moral Tales of History A. B. giving historical anec- dotes to illustrate- respect to parents; friendship, falsehood, industry, pride, anger, ingratitude. In 1829 appeared from the Serampore Dress, an excellent work, Sadgun-o-birjea, ANEC- DOTES OF VIRTUE, VALOR, 1 Re. 8 as., illustrating Moral Virtues, by 95 anecdotes selected from Ancient and Modern History,from Greece, Africa, Russia, Prussia and India. In 1826 was published by the 8. b. 8. the Kabitamritahup y pp. 44 : 8 as., a choice collection of 106 Sanskrit couplets, with a Bengali translation designed for scholars. The Bkramarastak appear- ed in 1830. BhartriharCs Centoes were published in 1831 ; Bhartrihari was the brother of King Vikramaditya, and wrote many fine moral sentences, mixed with exceptionable passages; a Latin translation has been published in Ger- many— Lard Chesterfield $ Advice to his son was translated
