Membrane: f. A membrane; the vpmost thinne skinne of any thing; also, a skinne of Parchment; also, the pill, or pilling betweene the barke, and tree.
Membrane Allantoïde. The middle of the three coats wherein an infant lyes wrapped in the wombe.
Membrane Amphiblistroïde. One of the foure principall membranes of the eye; is fashioned like a net; conueyes the light vnto the Christaline humor; and returnes all formes vnto the Optick sinew, whence it carries them vnto the braine, which iudges of them.
Membrane Aragnoïde. The spiderie membrane; issues from la pie mere, and incloses the fore-part of the Christaline humor; it serues (as the foyle in a Looking-glasse) to vnite, and retaine formes in the eye.
Membrane blanche. as Membrane Conjonctive.
Membrane Blepharoïde. A small membrane, wherby the waterie humor of the eye is distinguished from the glassie one.
Membrane Conjonctive. The white of the eye; or the fourth principall membrane (that couers all ouer the white) of the eye.
Membrane cornée. The hornie membrane; another of the foure, which resembles both in colour, and consistence, a thinne peece of horne; it springs from la dure Mere, and containes, by it hardnesse, all the humors together, but serues especially as a glaße, or spectacle vnto the Christaline.
Membrane piliforme. One of the two small membranes of the eye (Aragnoïde the other;) issues from the Vvée; incloses the fore-part of the glassie humour, where it prepares, and whitens the bloud brought vnto
it by many small veines, and arteries, for the nourishment of the Christaline humor. Membrane Pleuretique. A large, and two-fold membrane, through whose doubles paße all the sinewes, veines, and arteries, which are betweene the ribs, the inside whereof (as also of the breast, or bulke) it wholly couers. Membrane Raisiniere. as Membrane Vvée. Membrane Retiforme. as Membrane Amphiblistroïde. Membrane Vitrée. as Membrane Piliforme. Membrane Vvée. The grapie membrane; one of the foure principall ones; (tearmed so, because it resembles the skinne of a blacke Grape) comes from la pie mere, and incloses the eye on all parts, the ball excepted, where it is full of holes; it serues to comfort the Christaline humor by the diuersitie of the colours of it inward part; to keepe it from being hurt by the hornie tunicle; and to hold, and vnite, by it outward blacknesse, the spirits which otherwise would be dispersed.
