Many thanks for your kind letter of May 10th. I was very glad to hear from you and to know that my venerated Doctor is prospering and in good spirit as ever, and all my young friends have done so well in their student careers.
Yes, it is true that China is begin to follow the step of progress and its people is also begin to awake rapidly. But we do not believe that the Manchu Government is very pleased to such a change. The promise made by the throne to grant a constitution is merely a matter of throwing dust on the eyes of the world. I think a Parliament cannot be so easily obtained unless the people of China is strongly enough to demand it by force, so I am working harder than ever to promote the cause of the people. To oppose the present Government to the bitter end will do more good to China than any compromising for if we once relax our pressure our Manchu rules will soon go back to their old way as before. If the Manchus can change into better well and good, if not force is the only resort for the people to vindicate their right. We are preparing for the last solution.
