is only the head of the mace that is of metal, a short wooden haft forming the grip as seen in the extraordinarily enriched example which was formerly in the collection of Prince Mikhaïlovitch Galitzine, but is now in the Hermitage, Petrograd (Fig. 882). It will be noted that applied Gothic ornaments of the most flamboyant type decorate both the head and the haft of this gorgeous mace, the latter having been made hollow in order to receive the remaining
