DEDICATION

The publisher of this work volunteered in the Baltimore Batallion of Volunteers, under Col. George W. Hughes, July 4th, 1847, and was discharged January 12th, 1848, in consequence of a wound received at the Battle of Chapultepec. He is now on his return to his mother, who is a widow with five small children, who will be pendent in a great measure on his exertions for support. He then

DEDICATES THIS HUMBLE EFFORT,

first:

TO HIS MOTHER WHO TAUGHT HIM TO TAKE HIS COUNTRY'S SIDE.

second:

TO HIS COUNTRY,

And his beloved Commander, the gallant Lt. Col. Hughes.

thirdly:

TO THOSE TRUE PATRIOTIC REPUBLICANS,

who have been his firm friends in this city, viz,

COL. S. MEDARY, GEN. E. GALE, LIEUT. DOUGLASS, S. D. PRESTON, JOHN WALTON, E. GAVER, ETC.

and lastly:

TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN GENERAL,

who have proved themselves to be the true Patriots in this glorious war. Permit me then to conclude with the following sentiment: "My Country—right if possible;—but My Country, right or wrong."
ROBERT HALL SMITH, Author.
Columbus, May, 1848.
