On Friday, October 10, Field-marshal-Lieutenant Gustav Ratzenhofer died at sea, on the return trip from the St. Louis Congress of Arts and Science, in which he was a conspicuous participant. He was in the sixty-third year of his age. His contemporaries have hardly begun to discover the significance of his contributions to sociology. His importance will doubtless be appraised much higher at the end of a half-century than it is at present. The next stage in the development of social science will surely testify to his influence in ways that will render increasing honor to his memory.
