and Education; its Policies, Hoſtilities and Alliances, with the Frame, and Texture of its inward and outward Parts, and particularly thoſe that diſtinguish it from all other Animals, with their peculiar Aptitudes for the State of Being in which Providence has placed them, it would be one fo the beſt Services their Studies could do Mankind, and not a little redound to the Glory of the allwiſe Contriver."

How far I have anſwered the Recommendation, is left to the Judgment of the Reader. It may not, however, be improper to mention that it is impoſſible to write an exact or perfect Hiſtory of this Kind; becauſ a Number of Particulars will eſcape our niceſt Obſervations, and leave Room for future Diſcoveries. Upon this Reaſon my[1] Lord Bacon does not approvae of the hiſtorical Method of writing in Philoſophy; and hence
