DISSERTATION.

31′; but Arrowſmith's chart places it in Lat. 42° 24′, or 47′ more to the northward.

Pliny ſays, that the promontory Carambis is diſtant from the Os Ponti 315, or as ſome ſay 350, miles. The latter number approaches nearly to the computation of Arrian, who makes it amount to 2810 ſtadia, equal to 351 Greek miles, which is a cloſe coincidence. In Ptolemy, the difference of longitude between Carambis and the Os Ponti is 4° 56′, equal to 258 Engliſh miles, or nearly to 2810 Greek miles, or 2252 ſtadia. D'Anvi11e makes it to be 275 Greek miles, or about 2200 ſtadia, and Faden's map and Laurie's chart agree nearly herewith. But Arrowſmith's chart differs conſiderably, making the difference to be no more than 4° 11′ of Long. and 1° 7′ of Lat. equal nearly to 226 Engliſh miles, or 1974 ſtadia nearly. This place is deſcribed as a projecting cape by Apollonius.

From Carambis to the promontory Zephyrium 60 ſtadia. From Zephyrium to Abonitichos 150 ſtadia. Ptolemy places a city called Calliſtratia half way between Zephyrium and Abonitichos, but I do not find any mention of it elſewhere. Tournefort ſays, that there is ſtill a place of the name of Abono in that ſituation. The maps remark a caſtle in ruins near the place. Abonitichos is twice mentioned by Lucian, once in the Pſudomantis, and

Taurica Cherfonefus 2500 ſtadia. Pliny makes it only 170 miles, or 1360 ſtadia. It meaſures on Laurie and Whittle's chart 186 minutes of latitude, equal to about 1873 ſtadia. Faden's map makes it about 197 Engliſh miles, equal to about 1720 ſtadia. D'Anville makes it nearly 1500 ſtadia, or 187 Greek miles. Arrowſmith's chart makes it to be 117 minutes of latitude, or 1178 ſtadia only. The relative ſituation of theſe places is but imperfectly aſcertained, even by modern geographers.
