volumes and had no illustrations. Mr. Rackham’s illustrations first appeared in magazine form, in several parts, bound in wrappers, in 1901 and 1902. Cassell tells us that the subscribers’ edition was published in 1901, but possibly one volume at a time, the same as with the wrapper edition. A few of these illustrations first appeared in Cassell’s Magazine in 1896.
There is another three-volume edition bound in red cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine. This edition was published by Cassell in 1904, but is not dated. There are some cloth-bound editions in various bindings that were bound from the wrapper parts. The frontispiece of the first volume of the wrapper edition was tinted. The size of the page of the red cloth edition is 6⅛×8¾.
