When I asked my friend Marguerite Audoux to let me translate "Valserine" and these other short sketches of hers into English, she laughed and said "Why ?" I told her that the reading of them had given me pleasure, and that I thought other people would enjoy them too. "If you think," she said, "that they will give anybody pleasure, translate them." "Valserine," I may tell you in confidence, is only the sketch for a longer story, and should not be considered as a complete work. It was published in Paris Journal as a feuilleton, and has not yet appeared in volume form in any language.
