VATHEK, in the original French. By Mr. Beckford.

"Whenever a Literary Comet visits our hemisphere, it becomes a duty in us to point it out: as a phenomenon of this sort, we regard the History of Vathek.

"Traits of Nature are discernible in every page, through the veil of associations and habits dissimilar from our own; a machinery not only new, but wild and sublime, seizes on the mind, and pervades the whole composition,".—Maty's New Review.

"This is in every respect an extraordinary work. The circumstance of its having been written by an Englishman in pure French, is nearly unique; and the wildness of imagination displayed in it, and that property of genius which elicits from a reader a corresponding train of thought, and distinguishes character or describes passion by few striking traits, claim for the Author of Vathek, not only our praise, but that admiration which is due to distinguished merit."—Augustan Review, Dec. 1815.

——— for correctness of costume, beauty of description, and power of imagination, that most Eastern and sublime Tale, the "Caliph Vathek" far surpasses all European imitations; and bears such marks of originality, that those who have visited the east will find some difficulty in believing it to be more than a translation. As an Eastern Tale, even "Rasselas" must bow before it; his "Happy Valley" will not bear a comparison with the "Hall of Eblis."—See Lord Bryon's Works, vol. ii. page 101. Notes to the Giaour.
