pH of glucose broth is 7.6 to 8.0 in 10 days. Citrates not utilized. Nitrites not produced from nitrates. No gas produced in nitrate broth under ana- erobic conditions. Urease not produced. Aerobic. No growth in glucose broth under anaerobic conditions. Temperature relations: Optimum, be- tween 35° and 40° C. Maximum, 52° C. Source: Isolated from an infant's stool (Batchelor), from macerated figs (Saghafi and Appleman) and from the surface of an orange (Smith and Gordon, unpublished data). Habitat: Uncertain. Probably associated with decomposing materials. 10. Bacillus firmus Werner, 1933. (Cent, f. Bakt., II Abt., 87, 1933, 470.) fir'mus. L. adj. firmus strong, firm. Rods, 0.6 to 0.9 by 1.5 to 4.0 microns, with ends poorly rounded, occurring singly or in pairs. Stain uniformly. Motile. Gram-posi- tive. Spores, 0.7 to 0.9 by 1.0 to 1.4 microns, ellipsoidal, central to subterminal. Usually form in 48 hours and more numerous on agar without the beef extract. Sporangia only slightly swollen if at all. Gelatin stab: Slow crateriform liquefac- tion. Gelatin agar streak plate: Wide zone of hydrolysis. Agar colonies: Small, round, smooth, dense, whitish, rarely pink. Agar slants: Growth moderate, flat, smooth, opaque, whitish, rarely pink. Glucose agar slants: Growth very scant, inhibited b}^ the acid produced from the glucose. Glucose nitrate agar slants: No growth. Soybean agar slants: Scant, if any, growth. Broth: Turbidity light, uniform or floc- culent. NaCl broth: Usually there is growth in 5 per cent NaCl; no growth in 10 per cent. Milk agar streak plate: Moderate to wide zone of hydrolysis of the casein. Potato: No growth. Indole not produced. Slight acid but no gas (with peptone as source of nitrogen) from glucose. Starch hydrolyzed. Ammonium salts not utilized as source of nitrogen. Acetylmethylcarbinol not produced. pH of glucose broth is not less than 6.2 in 7 days; very little growth. Citrates not utilized. Nitrites produced from nitrates. No gas produced in nitrate broth under anaerobic conditions. Urease not produced. Accessory growth substances essential. Lecithinase not produced. Aerobic. No growth in glucose broth under anaerobic conditions. Temperature relations: Optimum, be- tween 28° and 33° C. No growth at 50° C. Source: Isolated from soil. Habitat: Soil and decomposing materials; also found as a laboratory contaminant. 11. Bacillus lentus Gibson, 1935. (Zent. f. Bakt., II Abt., 92, 1935, 368.) len'tus. L. adj. lentus slow. Rods, 0.6 to 0.9 by 1.5 to 4.0 microns, with ends poorly rounded, occurring singly or in pairs. Stain uniformly. Motile. Gram-posi- tive. Spores, 0.7 to 0.9 by 1.0 to 1.4 microns, ellipsoidal, central to subterminal. Usually form in 48 hours and are more numerous on agar without the beef extract. Sporangia only slightly swollen if at all. Gelatin stab: No liquefaction. Gelatin agar streak plate: No zone of hydrolysis. Agar colonies: Small, round, smooth, dense, whitish, not distinctive. Agar slants: Growth slow, thin, trans- lucent becoming opaque, whitish. Glucose agar slants: Growth scant, not so good as on agar because of the acid pro- duced from the glucose. Glucose nitrate agar slants: No growth. Soybean agar slants: Very scant, if any, growth. Broth: Faint, uniform turbidity; granular sediment. NaCl broth: Growth in 4 per cent, none in 5 per cent NaCl.
