AN ACT OF CHARITY

O MY God! I love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good, and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

(Ind. of 7 years and 7 quarantines[1] for saying the acts of faith, hope and charity, each time. — Benedict XIV, Jan. 28, 1756.)

THE ANGELUS

The Angelus is to be said morning, noon, and evening in memory of the adorable mystery of the Incarnation. On Saturday evening and on Sunday, it should be said standing, otherwise kneeling.

THE angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R. And she conceived by the Holy Ghost. Hail, Mary, etc.

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

R. Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail, Mary, etc.

V. And the Word was made Flesh.

R. And dwelt among us. Hail, Mary, etc.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

  1. A quarantine was a forty days’ fast on bread and water, joined with other penitential works, which was prescribed by the ancient Church. It usually began on Ash Wednesday, and terminated with the end of Lent. An indulgence of 7 quarantines, therefore, is equal in satisfactory value to seven of these ancient penitential exercises.
