In ſo moch that gentill men and honeſt peꝛſones haue greete delite in haukyng and deſire to haue the maner to take haukys: and alſo how and in waat wyſe they ſhulde gyde theym oꝛdynateli: and to knaw the gentill teꝛmys in communyng of theyꝛ haukys: and to vnderſtonde theyꝛ ſekeneſes and enfiꝛmitees: and alſo to knawe medicines for theym accoꝛdyng, and mony notabull teꝛmys that ben vſed ī hawkyng both of their haukys and of the fowles that theiꝛ hawkys ſhall ſley. Theꝛfore thys book fowlowyng in a dew forme ſhewys veri knawlege of ſuche pleſure to gentill men and pſonys diſpoſed to ſe itt.

Thys is the maneꝛ to begynne to kepe hawkys: bot not all maneꝛ hawkys, bott oonli Goſhawkys: and Teꝛcellis of Goſhawkys, and ſpare hawkys, and in watt maneꝛ thay ſhall be taake.

The maner to ſpeke of hawkis fro an eeg to thei be habull to be takene.

Now to ſpeke of hawkys, fiꝛſt thay been Egges, and afteꝛwarde they bene diſcloſed hawkys, and communeli goſhawkys been diſcloſed, as ſone as the choughe and in ſome place more tymeli afteꝛ the contre is of hete, and tymeli bredyng.
And we ſhall ſay that hawkis doon Eyeꝛ, and not brede, in the woodes. And we ſhall ſay that hawkys doon draw when they bere tymbering to theiꝛ neſtes, and nott they beld ne make theꝛ neſtes. And in the tyme of their loue they call, and not kauke. And we ſhall ſay that they trede.
And when they bene vncloſed and begynneth to fedeꝛ any thyng of lengthe. Anoon be kynde they will draw ſomwatt out of the neſt: and draw to bowis, and come agayn to theꝛ neſt
