6 PREFACE.

Notwithstanding the great care that has been taken in preparing and arranging such an array of subjects as this work includes, it was scarcely possible to prevent the omission of some few of, perhaps not the least important names. This was caused, in most instances, by unavoidable delay in obtaining some necessary point of information, until, as the work progressed in the printer's hands, it was too late to insert them in their proper places. These will be found in an appendix, at the end of which, though last not least, appears the name of the very latest brilliant addition to the stars of the theatrical firmament, Mr. Fechter.
