Operating base for patrol, mine, and landing craft of Polish and Soviet Navies. Commercial outport for Szczecin. Home port for fleet of fishing vessels. Terminus of car and passenger ferry from Ystad, Sweden. Commercial fishing activity consists mainly of loading coal and coke and discharging cargoes from ships having too great a draft to proceed to Szczecin. Ship-repair yard for fishing vessels. New shipyard facilities include 3,500-ton floating dry dock. New quays and handling equipment for bulk cargoes. Naval base has 2 small shipyards, storage facilities for material, ordnance, and petroleum products, in addition to communications, training, and medical facilities. Improved natural river harbor; consists of 3-mile stretch of Swina river and adjacent basins. Channel leading from Baltic to harbor has depth of 39 ft. Alongside - For 3 large, 10 standard, 5 small ocean-type cargo vessels; 7 standard, 12 small coaster-type cargo vessels; 55 lighters; 1 small ocean-type tanker; 24 medium (destroyers, destroyer escorts, gasoline tankers, submarines, ocean-type minesweepers), 78 small (coastal-type minesweepers, MTB's) naval vessels.

Anchorage - For 5 large passenger ships or aircraft carriers; 18 ocean-type cargo vessels or light cruisers in designated area immediately E. of harbor.

∗The estimated military port capacity is the maximum amount of general cargo - expressed in long tons - that can be unloaded onto the wharves and cleared from the wharf aprons during a period of one 24-hour day (20 effective cargo-working hours). The estimate is based on the static cargo-transfer facilities of the port existing at the time the estimate is prepared and is designed for comparison rather than for operational purposes; it cannot be projected beyond a single day by straight multiplication.
