Another witness recounts that at a certain point the squad made a halt to rest and entered the cottage of a road worker. Battisti, his tongue parched with thirst from the excessive heat and the dust of the road, asked for a drink. The corporal agreed. He had just washed his hands in a basin of water, and this was the drink he offered to Battisti.
