44. — Sketch for the Ceiling of the Chapel of Whitehall
King James, habited in royal robes, seated on a throne; on his right is Bellona, holding a shield; and before him is an armed figure, with the torch of Discord in his hand; from these the king is turning with disdain towards two females who are embracing, and who personify Peace and Abundance; in front of them is Mercury, pacifying the demon ol war by the touch of his caduceus. An angel and two cherubs, bearing a chaplet, are floating buoyant in the air over the king’s head.
