The works of these two minor poets: are, however, obscure, evidently because they were eclipsed .by the two liminaties of Gujarati: poetry who rose about the game time to sing infinitely better: Thefirst of these was a lady'‘of high social rank. She was the poetess ‘Miré, Queen to the illustrious: King: Kumbho,: Rana of Mewar. Rana Kumbho was a descendaht of the Kings -of Vallabhi, the ancient capital of Gujarat‘anda stronghold of Jains about the time it fell. One of his ancestots at Udepur, their capital in Mewar, had: married a daughter of Noushirvan, an Emperor of Persia, and a grand-daugh- ter of Emperor Maurice of Constantinople. : Kumbho’s grandson was Rana Sanga who fought so valiantly with Emperor Baber.’ Kumbho himself had a great name. He inflicted-a terribledefeat upon the allied Mahomedan Sove- reigns of Gujarat and Malva, and took the latter prisoner and set him free, not.only without ransom but with gifts. His other victories and services to his own people were gteat.' He was a poet and had artistic tastes. . And yet, as ironical fate sometimes hasit; ‘the Pringess Mira did not find his roof congenial to her ‘tastes’ and pursuits. On the first day after hex, marriage she proudly told her mother-in-law that her head would not bow to the god of her.husband’s family—she had elected for her god and husband the god Krishna, who was of ‘course not to be found on this earth. She retired to Gujarat and passed her life in Bhaktiand in singing her Bhakti—in the
