As Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, I proudly take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the Cherokee Nation. Whether or not you take an oath, all of us have a duty, as citizens, to become familiar with our constitution, the fundamental source of legal authority for the Cherokee Nation.

Our constitution was crafted by delegates to our 1999 constitutional convention and became effective in 2003. It was approved by the Cherokee people and further shaped through amendments as well as court decisions interpreting the very treaties referenced in the constitution. Our constitution embodies a vital link in an unbroken chain of governing law, from time immemorial, of the Cherokee people.

Part of my oath of office is “promote the culture, heritage and traditions of the Cherokee Nation.” An informed citizenry is vital to our success as a nation. Accordingly, I hope you enjoy learning more about your government by reading your copy of the Cherokee Nation constitution.
