Left a few line portraits, but dissolute habits injured his reputation. Died suddenly by an acciden- tal fall in Long Acre. Some ambassadors desiring to carry certain relics into their country were given by Gregory the Great a vase containing cloths which had touched the bodies of saints. They having expressed dissatisfaction at the gift, Greg- ory took one of the cloths, and, piercing it, showed them, to their astonishment, drops of blood falling from it. Pope Gregory I. (the Great) always had twelve poor men to sup with him ; but one night he saw thirteen at the table, though his steward could count but twelve, and he be- lieved the odd one to be Christ himself.
