French school; gen re painter, pupil of Regnault ; became one of the most successful paint- ers of his day, and had among liis pupils Gericault, Sigalon, Delacroix, and Ary Sehefter. His pictures, though masterly in technique, and correct in drawing, are treated in a somewhat cold and stitt'stxle. Guerin won the grand prix de Rome in 171)7.
