The Saint, in dark robe and yellow mantle, with lily branch in right hand, embraces with left the Child, who stands, partly draped, before him, looking front. Originally entitled the Coronation, and though intended to recall the crowning of Napoleon, the scene repre- joseph Spagnolelto, Escorial, Spain. sented is the coronation of Josephine by Na- poleon himself. The Emperor, descending from the altar, holds aloft the crown which he is about to place on the head of the Em- press, who is kneeling. Behind Napoleon is the Pope, and near him several cardinals and bishops ; further back are the ambassa- dors, and in front, at right, are Princes Le- brun, Cambaceres, Bcrthicr, and Talleyrand- Perigord. Behind the Empress is Joachim Murat, and near him Marshals Serrurier, Moncey, Bessieres, and General d'Harville ; to the left sits the Archbishop of Paris, and near him General Junot, the Queens of Na- ples and of Holland, and the Emperor's brothers ; behind them are Marshals Le- febvre, Kellerman, Perignon, and General Duroc. In the lower gallery sits the Em- peror's mother, with other ladies ; in the upper gallery stands David himself, sketch- ing. Salon, 1808.
