Van den Branden, 1072. SOPOLJS, Roman painter, about middle of 1st century B.C. Pliny says (xxxv. 40 [148]), that his works and those of Dionysius filled the picture galleries. Marine painter, pupil of Copen- hagen Academy, won a prize in 1847; cruised in the Mediterra- nean on a Danish frigate in 1846, and for some time went to sea every year in a Danish man-of-war ; visited Germany, the Netherlands, England, and France in 1853- 54, and Italy in 1864. Member of Copen- hagen (1856) and Stockholm Academies. Professor in 1869. Orders of Danebrog and Vasa.
