He fills his canvases with men and women, in the rich costumes of the time, sitting or standing near heavy- laden banqueting tables, relieved against modern architectural backgrounds, and sur- rounded by musicians, pages, attendants, dogs, birds, and other objects, grouped in the foreground with masterly effect. His children are charming, his women models of sensuous beauty, his mythological sub- jects are especially well treated, and his por- traits are remarkably life-like.
