ROCH m 1560. The brethren of the Scuola had asked some of the chief painters of Venice to send in trial sketches for the centrepiece in the ceiling. Tintoretto produced a fin- ished painting instead of a sketch, and had it placed in the oval. Both the brethren and his fellow competitors were offended, but as he offered the picture as a present, they were obliged to accept it.
