St. Francis Xavier, standing upon a high pedestal, habited in the black robes of his Order, is healing the sick and the dying, who are grouped in various positions around; behind the multitude rises a splendid temple with idols, one of which is falling upon its affrighted worshippers; above, in clouds, the Virgin with a chalice, surrounded by angels bearing a cross, in a stream of celestial light. Painted for Jesuits' Church, Antwerp; bought in 1774 by Empress Maria Theresa for 18,000 florins. Original sketch also in Vienna Museum. Engraved by Marinus; J.
