Born Sept. 12th, 1822; suc- ceeded his father in 1856 ; educated at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford, (B.A. 3rd class in Classics, 1844) ; sat as M.P. for Downpatrick, 1851 6; was Under Secretary for War, 1858 9; is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Kent, and Lieut. -Col. of the 2nd Kent Rifle Volun- teers ; appointed a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, 1868: married (1856) Lady Lavinia Bingham, 3rd daughter of the 3rd Earl of Lucan, K.C.B. HARDINGE, Viscount, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Henry, P.C. G.C.B. 1st Viscount Hardinge. He vas b. March 30, 1785; and was son of the Rev. Henry Hardinee. Rector of Stanhope. He entered the Army at a very early age ; became Col. of the 57th Foot ; was present at all the principal engagements of the Peninsular war, and on his return home wa>* made a member of the Privy Council ; received a cross and five clasps, and was Knight of various foreign Orders. He was a Member of the House of Commons, 18.'6 45, and was twice Secretary of War. In 1844, he was appointed Gov.-Gen. of India, which high office he held four years, and gained great reputation by his conduct during the Sikh war. In 1848 he returned home, and was made a Field Marshal in the Army, having been, in 1846, raised to the peerage, with a pension of .3,000 per annum: TO. Dec. 10, 1821, Lady Emily Jane Stewart, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Londonderry, K.G. and widow of John James, Esq. and d. Sept. 24, 1856, having had issue two sons and two daughters. Her ladyship d. in 1865. HARDWICKE, EARL OF. (YORKE.) CHARLES PHILIP YORKE, P.C. 5th Earl. Born April 23rd, 1836 ; succeeded his fa- ther 1873; educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge (M.A. 1858). Entered the Army as Cornet 7th Hussars 1857, became Lieut. 1859, when he ex- changed to the llth Hussars; retired 1861; served in the Indian campaign 1858 59, including the advance into Nepaul, and the affair at Sitkaghat. Has received a medal. Was Comptroller of H.M.'s Household, 1866 -8. Appointed Master Neither covet nor fear.
