Appointed Consul-General in Syria, 1841 ; Secre- tary of Embassy at Constantinople, 1851, and was Charge d' Affaires there, 1852--3. Acted as Queen's Commissioner (with the local rank of Brigadier- Gen.) at the French hea^-quarters during the Crimean war, 1854 6 ; and was mentioned in the despatches of Marshals St. Arnaud, Canrobert, and the Duke of Malakoff, and in the London Gazette for distinguished conduct at the French trenches, where he was wounded ; was present at the battles of the Alma and Inkermann, the taking of the Malakoff, the siege of Sebastopol, and other actions ; has the Crimean medal and four clasps, Commander's Cross of the Legion of Honour, and of the Medjidie ; made a K.C.B. 1855. Was President of the Army Transport Commission, 1856. Commanded the Central Field Force throughout the Indian Mutiny, 1857 8 ; was thanked in despatches, in the London Gazette, by the Supreme Government of India, and the Government of Bombay, and received the thanks of Parliament for " brilliant services " in India; created a G.C.B. and given the command of the 92nd Regt. 1858. Appointed an Extraor- dinary Member of the Council of India, and made Commander-in-Chief in India, 1860. Was afterwards Commander of the Forces in Ireland. Appointed Col. of the 92nd Highlanders 1867, and Col. of the Royal Horse Guards, 1869. Is a Commissioner of Lieutenancy for the City of London. Acted as one of the Commissioners in Dublin (during the Earl of Kim- berley's absence), Oct. 1865 and May 1866.
