Residence, 5, St. George's Crescent, Eccles, Lancashire. This ancient family derives its name from the town of Bellingham-in-Tyndale, co. Northumberland, where it appears to have been seated immediately after the conquest, and its descent to the present baronet is in direct male line, without any interruption, from Alan de Bellingham, who lived in time of William the Conqueror. Sir Henry Bellingham, of Bellingham, was made a knight banneret by Henry VI. after the battle of Wakefield ; his son, Sir Roger, was made a banneret after the battle of Stoke in 1487, and left an only son, Sir Robert, who died without issue. Sir Edward, Gov. of Ireland 1548-9, whom Leland, in his History of Ireland, calls "a brave and experienced commander." He was servant of the Privy Chamber to Edward VL, who appointed him Lord Deputy of Ireland. Alan, of Helsington, a bencher of the Middle Temple, one of the King's Council at York, and M.P. fot Northumberland 1570; his son, Sir James, was knighted by James I. in 1603, and died 1641, having married Agnes, da. of Sir Henry Curwen. His son, Sir Henry, created a baronet 1620, was M.P. for Westmoreland in all the Parliaments called by Charles I., and raised forces in the north for the royal cause ; his son, Sir James, dying without issue, the title became extinct. Henry, 2nd son of Alan Bellingham, of Levens Hall, was an officer in a regiment of cavalry raised in the north for suppressing the rebellion in Ireland, and at the termination of that rebellion had lands granted him in co. Louth {which co. the Bellinghams represented 1660-1775 without intermission), now called Castle Bellingham. These lands were confirmed by patent of King Charles II., and he added to them very considerably by purchase. He died 1676, having married Miss Sibthorpe, and by her had Anne, who married Robert Bickerton, of Armagh, brother of Jane, Duchess of Norfolk, and Thomas who raised a regiment of cavalry and served as its Col. with King William in Ireland, where he acted as his guide during the march of the army from Dundalk to the Boyne, served in that action, and after it accompanied the king to Duleek. For these proofs of attachment to King William, the army of King James, in their retreat towards the Boyne, destroyed Bellingham Castle by fire. His son Henry, M.P. for Dundalk, had a son Henry, M.P. for Louth, and a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Hon. John Fortescue, uncle of the last Earl of Clermont. Alan, youngest son of Henry, married Alice, daughter and co-heiress of Rev. H. Montgomery, of Grey Abbey, co. Down, and had issue, Henry, leaving issue male which became extinct in 1822, on the death of his grandson, William Henry, an officer in the 6th Regt. Sir William, the 4th son, created a baronet in 1796, with remainder to the heirs male of his deceased father, was M.P. for Reigate, Sec. to Pitt, and a Commr. of the Navy, married Hester Frances, daughter of the Rev. the Hon.
