Sir JOHN BENNET LAWES, F.R.S., ist Baronet^ son of the late John Bennet Lawes, Esq., D.L., of Rothamsted; b. Dec. 28th, 1814; ed. at Eton, and at Brasenose Coll., Oxford ; has achieved considerable fame as a practical experi- mental agricultural chemist, and for the revolution in the Science of Agriculture that has been produced by his introduc- tion of super-phosphate of lime ; in 1854 was elected a F.R.S., and in the same year a handsome testimonial was presented to him for the services he had rendered to British Agriculture ; in 1867 he was awarded the Roy. Medal by the Council of the Roy. So., and he has also received a Gold Medal from the Imperial Agricultural So. of Russia, and from the Emperor of Germany the Gold Medal of Merit for Agriculture ; acted upon a Roy.
