This Baronetcy is assumed by each of the under-mentioned gentlemen, as jth and ^th Baronet respectively. The first-named is great-grandson of Sir John Payne, who succeeded his father, Sir Gillies, without dispute, and died in 1803, and was in turn succeeded by his son Charles as 4th baronet, also without dispute. In 1828 Peter Payne, the younger brother of John Payne (ante), assumed the title, on an allegation of the illegitimacy of his elder brother, the said John Payne, and in consequence of a finding by a Master in Chancery in certain legal proceedings relative to the custum of the Manor of AtlinWorch, in which he was found to be the. eldest legitimate son of Sir Gillies ; but the order of confirmation of the Court in regard to th ; s finding was subse- quently discharged, and an issue offered as to the legitimacy of both John and Peter Payne, which, however, was never tried. From Peter is de- scended the second-named. ^rms Gules, a fesse between two lions passant-guardant argent. Crist A lion's jamb erect argent, grasping a broken tilting spear gules.
