Villa S. Nicolai, the “village of St. Nicholas,” which others call Portus S. Nicolai, the “haven of St. Nicholas.” It is a large place, they say that there are 300 householders in it. The Prince of Lorraine holds it; and it is said, that he does not allow the French in the village to fortify themselves for fear of their taking part against him. We breakfasted in the town of Lenshtot, two leagues from the village.

On the morrow, Sunday, they showed us in the village the hand of St. Nicholas[1] and other relics. In the church of St. Nicholas lies such a quantity of iron, fetters, chains, &c., that every one of us, who was present, declared that he had never seen a greater quantity of such iron; and without deception, I think that it could not be carried off in
