have had them before this Time; have you any Witneſſes here preſent?

Pris. I have none at preſent, but to Morrow I will have them, I am ſure no Man can ſay ill of me in Yorkſhire.

Court. Have you any Witneſſes here?

Pris. Yes, William Thompſon, Eſq; alſo one Whitehead, and one Mr. Gill.

All theſe were called in Court, but did not appear.

Court. The Jury cannot ſtay, and you ſee there is none appearing for you.

Pris. I thought I ſhould be removed to Eſſex, for I did not expect to be Tried in this Country, therefore I could not prepare Witneſſes to my Character.

After this the Hon. Sir. William Chapple gave his charge to the Jury.

Prisoner. The Reaſons I had for changing my Name, were that I having been long out of Trade, and run my ſelf into Debt, I changed my Name to my Mother's, which was Palmer.

Court. What was your Name before you came to Lincolnſhire?

Priſoner. Turpin.

Court. Was it Richard Turpin?

Prisoner. Yes.

Prisoner. I thought I ſhould have been removed, and got my Trail in Eſſex.

Court. You have deceived yourſelf in thinking ſo.

The JURY immediately, without going out of Court, brought in their Verdict, GUILTY.
