HOCKLEY, WILLIAM BROWNE (1792–1860)
Born Nov. 9, 1792 : went to Haileybury, Jan. 1812 : to Bombay, May, 1813 : dismissed from his judgeship, Sep. 1821 : tried in Bombay, 1823, and acquitted : finally dismissed with a pension of £150 a year, 1824 : disappeared from view, and died Aug. 22, 1860 : wrote Pandurang Hari (to which Sir Bartle Frere wrote an introduction) : also the Tales of a Zenana, published in 1827, with a new edition, 1874, with an introductory Preface by Lord Stanley of Alderley : described as a "writer of genius."
HODGES, WILLIAM (1744–1797)
Born in 1744 : son of a smith : learnt to draw : exhibited at the Society of Artists : became a draughtsman on Captain Cook's second expedition, 1772–5 : exhibited at the Royal Academy : went to India, 1778–84, under the patronage of Warren Hastings : in 1785 he published in London, A Comparative View of the Ancient Monuments in India : and in 1793 his Travels in India during the years 1780–83, illustrated from his own pictures : he had become R.A. in 1789 : paid a visit to St. Petersburg in 1790 : retired from his profession of painting before 1795 : 21 of his pictures, the property of A. Cleveland (q.v.), sold in Calcutta in 1794 : he died March 6, 1797.
HODGSON, BRIAN HOUGHTON (1800–1894)
I.C.S. : born Feb. 1, 1800 : son of Brian Hodgson, a banker : educated at Macclesfield, Richmond, andHaileybiury : went to India, 1818 : after passing through the College of Fort William, Calcutta, he was Assistant Commissioner in Kumaon for 2 years, 1818–20 : Assistant Resident at Katmandu, in Nipal, 1820–9, acting Resident, 1829–31, Resident, 1833–44. He kept Nipal quiet during the first Afghan war, but Lord Ellenborough hastily removed him from Nipal, whereupon he resigned the service. While in Nipal, Hodgson studied its literature, religion and language, discovering the literature of Northern Buddhism, collecting original MSS., Tibetan and Sanskrit, which he distributed to libraries : gathering together encyclopaedic information on Nipal : he also worked at ethnology, zoology, geography. He returned to India in 1844–5 and lived at Darjeeling, to continue his researches in ethnology, and his collections : also advocated some useful practical measures, such as the enlistment of Gurkhas, hill stations for Europeans, normal colleges : finally left India in 1858 : became F.R.S. in 1877 : D.C.L. in 1889 : an honorary member of many learned Societies : received many honours by his literary attainments : universally praised by competent judges : died in London, May 23, 1894. He wrote a number of works and papers : among them Illustrations of the Literature and Religion of the Buddhists, Essays on the Languages, Literature, and Religion of Nipal and Tibet, etc. : A borigines of India : Miscellaneous Essays relating to Indian Subjects : described by Burnouf (q.v.) as the founder of the true study of Buddhism.
HODGSON, JOHN STUDHOLME (1805–1870)
Son of John Hodgson : born May, 1805 : educated at the R.M.A., Woolwich : emtered the Bengal N.I. in 1822 : in the first Sikh war, 1845–6, was at Sobraon : raised the first Sikh regt. enrolled in the British service : commanded it in the second Sikh war, 1848–9 : took Ukrot : organized the Panjab Irregular Force : commanded the Derajat frontier, and in operations against the hill tribes : held the command at Peshawar after Sir Colin Campbell : Maj-General, 1861 : died in 1870.
HODSON, WILLIAM STEPHEN RAIKES (1821–1858)
Son of the Rev. George Hodson : born March 19, 1821 : educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge : B.A., 1844 : entered the E. I. Co.'s service, 1845 : was, in the second Grenadiers, present at the battles of Mudki, Firozshahr, Sobraon : Adjutant of the Guides in 1847 : Assistant
