Son of Alexander Maclean : born Dec. 13, 1844 : educated at Westminister and Trinity College, Cambridge : called to the bar at the Inner Temple, 1868; Q.C., 1886 : M.P. for Mid-Oxfordshire, 1885–91 : Master in Lunacy, 1891 : Chief Justice of Bengal since 1896 : knighted : Chairman of Indian Famine Relief Committees, 1897 and 1900 : Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, 1898–9 : K.C.I.E., 1898.

MACLEAN, FREDERICK GURR ?_ )

Appointed to the Telegraph Department, 1868 : was Superintendent of the Field Telegraph in the Afghan war, 1878–80 : Director-General of Indian Telegraphs, 1900 : C.I.E., 1903 : retired.

MACLEAN, SIR HECTOR (1756–1848),

Son of Hugh Maclean : in the E. I. Co.'s service : in an expedition to Arcot, a siege of Pondicherry, and the reduction of Pulicat : commanded Cuddalore and its defences, 1786 : under Cornwallis at Bangalore, and at Seringapatam, 1792 : commanded a native corps in Ceylon, 1798 : and the 9th N.I. in 1800, under Colonel Arthur Wellesley : Brigadier, 1800–3 : at Asirghar, Gawilghar, and Argaum : commanded the forces near Hyderabad, 1805 : K.C.B., 1815 : Lt.-General, 1821 : General, 1838 : died Dec. 11, 1848.

MACLEAN, JAMES MACKENZIE (1835–)

Born Aug. 13, 1835 : son of Alexander Maclean : editor of the Newcastle Chronicle, 1855–58 : on the staff of the Manchester Guardian, 1858–9 : editor and proprietor of the Bombay Gazette, 1859–79 : M.P. for Oldham, 1885–92 : M.P. for Cardiff, 1895–1900 : author of Maclean's Guide to Bombay, Recollections of Westminster and India : President of the Institute of Journalists, 1897–8.

MACLEOD, SIR ALEXANDER (1767–1831)

Entered the Artillery, 1784, and served in India for 47 years without interruption : was at Cornwallis' siege of Seringapatam : under Lord Lake in the Mahratta war : at the siege of Kamona, Gunnouri, and Bhawani : commanded Ochterlonv's Artillery in the Nipal war, 1814 : at the siege of Hatras, 1817 : commanded the Artillery of a Division in the Mahratta-Pindari war, 1818 : commanded the Artillery in the field, 1819–20, and the Regiment of Artillery, 1823 : in command at capture of Bhartpur, 1825–6 : Brig-General, K.C.B. : died at Dum Dum, Aug. 20, 1831.

MACLEOD, SIR JOHN MACPHERSON (1792–1881)

I.C.S. : born 1792 : son of Donald Macleod : educated at Edinburgh Univer- sity and at Haileybury : went out to Madras, 1811 : was Financial and General Secretary to the Madras Government, 1824 : Persian translator to Government, 1826 : Revenue and Judicial Secretary, 1827 : Member of the Board of Revenue, 1829 : Commissioner in Mysore, 1832–3 : Member of the Indian Law Commission with Macaulay (q.v.), 1835 : Member of the Commission for Revising the System of Prison Discipline, 1836 : returned to England, 1838 : retired, 1841 : K.C.S.I. in 1866 : Privy Council, 1871 : died March 4, 1881.

MACLEOD, NORMAN (1754–1801)

General : born at Brodie House, Nairnshire, March 4, 1754 : educated under Professor George Stuart at Edinburgh : succeeded his grandfather in 1772, as Chief of the Clan : took up his residence at Dunvegan : entertained Dr. Johnson there in 1773 : entered the Army, 1774, as Captain of the 71st regt. : went out to America with his bride, Mary Mackenzie : both were taken prisoners, but were kindly treated by Washington : at Madras, in 1782, as Lt-Colonel of the 2nd Battahon of the 42nd Highlanders, raised by himself : fought against Tippoo in several brilliant engagements : in 1783 took the fortress of Bednore : promoted, 1783, to Brig-General : appointed C in C of the Malabar Army in place of General Matthews : returned to England in 1789 : died at Guernsey, Aug. 1801.
