MOORSOM, WILLIAM ROBERT (1834–1868)
Son of Captain William Scarth Moorsom : joined the 52nd Light Infantry, 1852 : when the mutiny broke out he returned from Ceylon : was A.D.C. and D.A.Q.M.G. to Havelock at the relief of Lucknow : his skilful plans greatly helped the advance of the Generals and their forces : killed at Lucknow on March 24, 1858.
MORADABAD, RAJA JAI KISHAN DAS, BAHADUR OF (1832–1905)
He belonged to a family of Chaube Brahmans : his brother, Ghanshiam Das, had been a tahsildar at Hatras, but retired before the mutiny, being blind and paralysed : in spite of his infirmities, he rendered valuable assistance to Government in 1857, but was surprised and slain by the rebels at Khasganj. He had been loyally supported by his brothers, Jai Kishan Das and Mohan Lai : Jai Kishan was made Raja in 1860, given a khilat and lands assessed on favourable terms : he served for several years as a Deputy Collector : Fellow of the Allahabad University : C.S.I, in 1870 : active supporter of the Countess of Dufferin's Fund : died 1905.
MOREHEAD, CHARLES (1807–1882)
Son of Rev. Robert Morehead D.D. : brother of W. A. Morehead (q.v.) : born in 1807 : M.D. of Cambridge : entered the Bombay Medical Service in 1829 : was on the Staff of Sir Robert Grant, Governor of Bombay, 1835–8 : was President of the Medical and Physical Society, Bombay, 1835–59 : Surgeon of the General Hospital, 1838 : in 1845 the Grant Medical College was erected at his instance, and he was the first Principal and Professor of Medicine : he also initiated native medical education in the Bombay Presidency, as Secretary to the Board of Native Education, 1840–5 : and was the first physician of the Jamsetji Jijibhai Hospital, till 1859 : Hony. Surgeon to Queen Victoria : retired in 1862 : F.R.S. of Edinburgh : C.I.E., 1881 : author of various medical works relating to India : died Aug. 24, 1882.
MOREHEAD, WILLIAM AMBROSE (1805–1863)
Of the I.C.S. : son of Rev. R. Morehead, D.D. : and brother of Dr. C. More- head (q.v.) : born 1805 : arrived at Madras, 1825 : dealt well and strongly with a native outbreak connected with the murder of Macdonald of the Civil Service at Cuddapah in 1832 : was made a Judge of the Sadr Court in 1846, and in 1850 was deputed to hold an inquiry in Ceylon relating to Lord Torrington's administration : while Member of Council, Madras, from 1857 to 1862, he acted twice as Governor, for a month in 1860 on Sir C. E. Trevelyan's recall, and for 6 months in 1860–61 after Sir H. G. Ward's death. He was Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University. But for ill-health he might have been a Member of the Governor-General's Supreme Council in 1862 : retired in Oct. 1862 : died at Edinburgh, his native city, Dec. 1, 1863.
MORE-MOLYNEUX, GEORGE HAND (1851–1903)
Born May 6, 1851 : son of Lt-Colonel A. More-Molyneux : educated at Bedford : joined the Army, 1870, and became Colonel, 1894 : passed the Staff College, 1884 : in the Afghan war 1878–80, commanded the Jezailchi Corps—now the Khyber Rifles : Soudan expedition, 1885, as D.A.Q.M.G. : Burma expedition, 1885–9, as D.A.A.G., Brevet-Lt-Colonel : Tirah campaign, 1897–8, as A.Q.M.G. : D.S.O. : Military Attache, Russia, 1890–2 : commanded 1st Bengal Infantry, 1892–93 : A.Q.M.G., India, 1893–8: Brig-General commanding Bundelkund, 1898–01, and Rohilkund District since 1901 : C.B., 1900 : died Nov. 21, 1908 : Maj-General.

Morgan : educated at King's College, London : called to the bar at the Middle Temple, 1844 : an advocate of the Supreme Court, Calcutta, 1851 : Clerk to the Legislative Council of India, 1854–9 : Master in Equity of the Supreme Court, Calcutta, 1859–62 : Puisne Judge, Calcutta High Court, 1862–6 : Chief Justice of the High Court, N.W.P., 1866–71 : knighted : Chief Justice, Madras, 1871–9.
