PEEL, SIR LAWRENCE (1799–1884)

Son of Joseph Peel, and nephew of Sir Robert Peel, first Baronet, and first cousin of the second Baronet, the Prime Minister : born Aug. 10, 1799 : educated at Rugby and St. John's College, Cambridge : called to the bar at the Middle Temple, 1824 : Treasurer, 1866 : Commissioner of the Board of Control, 1828 : Advocate-General at Calcutta, 1840–2 : Chief Justice of Bengal in 1842 : knighted : Vice-President of the Governor-General's Legislative Council, 1854–5 : retired, 1855 : Member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, 1856 : Director of the E. I. Co. from 1857 : D.C.L. Oxford, 1858 : died July 22, 1884.

PEEL, SIR WILLIAM (1824–1858)

Born Nov. 2, 1824 : third son of Sir Robert Peel, the Prime Minister : entered the Royal Navy in 1838 : saw service in the Mediterranean station, China, in the Pacific, N. America, W. Indies : Captain, 1849 : travelled, and wrote A Ride through the Nubian Desert, 1852 : with the Naval Brigade at Sebastopol : gained his V.C. and C.B : in the Indian mutiny, commanded the Shannon up to Calcutta, and formed and led the Naval Brigade up country, comprising ten 8 inch guns : in a number of actions : K.C.B. 1858 : at the relief of Lucknow,March 1858, severely wounded : died of smallpox at Cawnpur, April 27, 1858 : conspicuous by his bravery and personal example : a statue was erected to him at Calcutta.

PEILE, SIR JAMES BRAITHWAITE (183.3- )

I.C.S. : born April 27, 1833 : son of Rev. T. W. Peile : educated at Repton and Oriel College, Oxford : Scholar : first class Moderations : first class. Final School : went to Bombay in the Civil Service, 1856 : Under Secretary to the Bombay Government : Director of Public Instruction, 1869–72 : acting Municipal Commissioner of Bombay : Political Agent in Kattiawar, 1873–8 : acting Commissioner in Sind, 1878 : Member of Famine Commission, 1878–80 : Secretary and Acting Chief Secretary, Bombay, 1879–82 : Member of Council, Bombay 1883–6 : Vice-chancellor of Bombay University, 1884–6 : Member of Supreme Council, Oct. 1886 to Oct. 1887, and of the Council of India, 1887–1902 : C.S.I. , 1879 : K.C.S.I. 1888.

PEILE, SOLOMON CHARLES FREDERICK (1855–)

Son of General Peile, R.E. : educated at Rugby : entered the Indian Army : served in Afghan war, 1878–9 : Burma, 1885–93 : commanded Kachin operations: Brevet-Lt-Colonel : C.I.E., 1901 : Inspr-General of Police, Burma.

PELLEW, SIR FLEETWOOD BROUGHTON REYNOLDS (1789–1861)

Son of first Lord Exmouth : born Dec. 13, 1789 : entered the Navy, 1799 : serving under his father in the East Indies : in actions against the Dutch, and the Malay pirates : Captain, 1808 : at the taking of the Mauritius, 1810 : Java, 1811 : C.B., 1815 : K.C.H., 1836 : C. in C. of the East India and China stations, 1852 : in the Burma war : recalled from his command for his severity : Admiral, 1858 : died July, 28, 1861.

PELLY, SIR LEWIS (1826–1892)

Born Nov. 14, 1825 : son of John Hinde Pelly : educated at Rugby : joined the E. I. Co.'s Bombay army, 1841 : Lt-General, 1887 : Assistant Resident at Baroda, 1851–2 : A.D.C. to John Jacob in the Persian war, 1857 : Secretary of Legation at Teheran and Charge d' Affaires, 1859 : rode from Persia to India through Herat and Kandahar, without escort : on a special Mission to the Comoro Islands, 1861 : Political Agent at Zanzibar, 1861–2 : Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, 1862–71 : active in suppressing the slave trade : visited Riyadh, the capital of Nejd, Central Arabia, 1865 : C.S.I. , 1868 : with Sir Bartle Frere's (q.v.)
