Born at Lymington, July 8, 1817 : educated at Edinburgh University : went out to Calcutta, Aug. 1839, as a Missionary of the Church of Scotland Mission : joined the Free Church : also acted as Presbyterian Chaplain of the 42nd regt. and accompanied it in the field, until recalled by the Home Government : in 1840 devised the plan of the Zenana Mission : left India, 1858, for ministerial duty in Edinburgh : also edited the Calcutta Review, Nos, 35-49, and wrote 32 articles in it : was a keen mathematician and wrote on the Astronomy of the Hindus and various subjects : succeeded Dr. Alexander Dufi (q.v.) as Professor of Evangelistic Theology in the Free Church of Scotland : was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Chiurch in 1891 : wrote also Mediceval Missions, 1880; Alexander Duff, 1883; Modern Missions and Culture, and History of Protestant Misions (both translated from the German), 1884 : edited a series of The Protestant Divines.
