STACK, SIR MAURICE (1796–1880)

Son of Rev. John Stack : born 1796 : entered the Army, 1815 : served with the ist European Fusiliers in Kattia war and Cutch : against marauders in Gujarat in 1818 : commanded a Brigade in Sind, 1843, under Sir C. Napier : at the battle of Hyderabad : C.B. 1843 : K.C.B., 1867 : Lt-General, 1868 : General, 1873 : died July 20, 1880.

STANHOPE, HON. EDWARD (1840–1893)

Son of the fifth Earl Stanhope : born Sep. 24, 1840 : educated at Brighton, Harrow, Christ Church, Oxford : Fellow of All Souls' College : called to the bar at the Inner Temple, 1865 : M.P. for Mid-Lincolnshire and the Horncastle Division, 1874–93 : Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, 1857 : was Under Secretary of State for India from April 6, 1878, to April 29, 1880, during the important time of the Afghan war and part of Lord Lytton's Viceroyalty : and had to deal with great financial measures and political questions : was subsequently Vice-President of the Committee of Council of Education : President of the Board of Trade: Secretary of State for the Colonies, and for War, 1887–92 : died Dec. 21, 1893.

STANLEY, SIR EDMOND (1760–1843)

Son of James Stanley : Scholar of Trinity College Dublin: called to the Irish bar, 1782 : K.C. in Ireland, , 1789 : M.P. in Ireland, 1790–1800 : King's Prime Serjeant, 1800 : Recorder of Prince of Wales' Island, 1807 : knighted: Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, Madras, 1815 : Chief Justice 1820 : retired, 1825 : died April 28, 1843.

STANLEY, SIR JOHN (1846–)

Born Nov. 22, 1846 : son of John Stanley : educated at Armagh and Trinity College, Dublin : called to the Irish bar, 1872 : Q.C., 1892 : Judge of Calcutta High Court, 1898–1901 : Chief Justice of High Court, of the United Provinces, since 1901 : LL.B : K.B., 1901.

STANNUS, SIR EPHRAIM GERRISH (1784–1860)

Son of Ephraim Stannus : born 1784 : went to India in the Bombay Army, 1799–1800 : in Kattiawar, 1807 : in the Pindari- Mahratta war, 1817–8 : at the capture of Bhuj, in Cutch, 1819 : at Dwarka, 1820 : Major : Private Secretary to Mount-stuart Elphinstone, whilst Governor of Bombay : Lt-Colonel, 1822 : C.B., 1823 : the first British Resident in the Persian Gulf, 1824–6 : Lieutenant-Governor of the East India College, Addiscombe, 1834–50 : knighted, 1837 : Maj-General : died Oct. 21, 1850.

STANSFELD, SIR JAMES (1820–1898)

Born, 1820 : son of James Stansfeld : educated at University College, London : called to the bar from the Middle Temple : M.P. for Halifax, 1859–95 : his only connexion with India was his brief tenure of the office of Under Secretary of State for India in Lord John Russell's Government, from Feb. 17 to July 6, 1866 : was twice President of the Local Government Board and a prominent Liberal in politics : G.C.B., 1895 : died Feb. 17, 1898.

STAUNTON, FRANCIS FRENCH (1779?–1825)

Born about 1779 : joined the Cheshire Fencible Infantry, 1795, and the Bombay N.I., Sep. 1798 : in the Mysore war, at Seringapatam, 1799 : in Egypt, 1801 : in the Mahratta war, 1815–8 : at Kirki : commanded a small detachment which defeated the Peshwa's army of 20,000 men at Korigaum, Jan. 1, 1818 : "one of the most heroic actions which has ever been fought and gained by a handful of men over a large army" : C.B. : Lt-Colonel, 1823 : died at sea, June 25, 1825.
