TAYLOR, SIR ALEXANDER (1820–)
General, R.E : born 1826 : son of William Taylor : educated at Hofuzl, Switzerland, and Addiscombe : entered the Bengal Engineers in 1843 : served through the Satlaj campaign of 1845–6, and the Panjab campaign of 1848–9, being present at the siege of Multan, and at Gujarat : in the Public Works Department in 1849 : in the mutiny he was present throughout the siege and capture of Delhi, as Assistant Engineer to Baird Smith (q.v.) : he commanded the Engineers at the siege and capture of Lucknow : severely wounded: C.B. in 1858 : commanded the Engineers in the Umbeyla campaign, 1863 : Secretary to the Panjab Government, in the P.W.D. between 1865 and 1872 : President of the Defence Committee of India, 1876–8 : Lt-General, and K.C.B., in 1877 : General in 1878 : President of the Royal Engineering College, Cooper's Hill, 1880–96 : G.C.B. in 1889.
TAYLOR, GEORGE NOBLE (1820–1903)
I.C.S. : born 1820 : son of General Sir Henry G. A. Taylor : educated at Haileybury : went to Madras in 1840 : held subordinate appointments before, until in 1863 he was made special Commissioner for Railways at Calcutta, to report upon affairs of the E. I. Railway, and held a similar post at Bombay : was Member of the Supreme Council, 1865–70 : died March 4, 1903.
TAYLOR, SIR HENRY GEORGE ANDREW (1784–1876)
General : born in 1784 : entered the Madras Army in 1798 : in 1803 was at Assaye and Argaum, and at Gawilghar, Dec. 15, 1805 : in 1809, under Sir Barry Close : served many years in the Commissariat up to 1822 : under Sir J. Doveton against the Pindaris : was Town Major at Madras, as Lt-Colonel, 1825 : Brigadier at Vellore, 1828 : commanded the Northern Division of the Army in India, 1832–7 : suppressed rebellions in the Vizagapatam and Ganjara districts : retired, 1838 : C.B., 1839 : General in 1857 : K.C.B., 1862 : G.C.B., 1873 : died Feb. 9, 1876.
TAYLOR, JOHN HENRY (1822–1887)
Son of George Ledwell Taylor, Architect to the Admiralty : educated at Black-heath School : entered the Merchant Service, 1839 : was well known as Captain of the Renown and Trafalgar, two of Green's Liners between London and Calcutta : R.N.R. : Master Attendant, Madras, 1874–87 : Sheriff of Madras, 1883–86 : Trustee of the Harbour Board Trust, 1886 : author of The Law of Storms : died 1887.
TAYLOR, JOSEPH (1793?–1835)
Arrived in India, 1808, in the Engineers : Garrison Engineer at Agra : Executive Engineer at Dinapur : Civil Architect at Fort William : Acting Chief Engineer : Superintending Engineer N.W.P., 1830 : reduced many small forts near Agra occupied by refractory zamindars : repaired the Taj at Agra, and Akbar's tomb at Sikandra, besides constructing other works of beauty and utility : was a volunteer at Hatras, 1817 : at Bhartpur, 1825–6 : Brevet-Major : Lt-Colonel, 1831 : died April 20, 1835.
TAYLOR, PHILIP MEADOWS (1808–1876)
Colonel : born Sep. 25, 1808 : son of Philip Meadows Taylor, merchant : went to Bombay, at 15, to a commercial house, but left it and entered the Nizam's military-service, 1824, to which he reverted after a period in the civil branches. He was the Times correspondent in India, 1840–53. In 1841 the Nizam's Government appointed him to administer, during a long minority, the principality of the young Raja of Shorapur. He raised this state to a very prosperous condition until 1853, when the dissipated Raja acceded, Taylor was given charge of a district, and in the mutiny kept the Booldana District in N.
