WALLACE, JAMES ROBERT (1866?–1903)

M.D. : born Jan. 20, 1856 (?) educated at the Lawrence Military School, Sanawar, and Medical College, Calcutta : went to England in 1879 : on his return, entered Government service, but resigned it in 1883. In 1892 he joined the Directors of the Eurasian and Anglo-Indian Association, and in 1897 and 1902 was delegated to represent the grievances of the community to the Secretary of State and the Members of Parliament. In 1901 he was elected President of the Imperial Anglo-Indian Association, and laboured hard for the domiciled Anglo-Indian community. He died in 1903.

WALLICH, NATHANIEL (1786–1854)

A Dane : born Jan. 28, 1786 : M.D. of Copenhagen : entered the Danish Medical Service, and went to Serampur : joined E. I. Co.'s service, 1813 : Superintendent of the Botanic Garden, Calcutta, 1817–46 : "an able and most energetic botanist," organized collecting expeditions into the remote and then little known regions of Kumaon, Nipal, Sylhet, Tennaserim, Penang, Singapur : took, and sent home, enormous collections (8,000 specimens) of dried plants, distributing them to the leading botanical institutions in Europe : helped W. Carey (q.v.) to publish Roxburgh's Flora Indica : published his Plantae Asiaticae Rariores, 3 vols., 1830–2 : explored Nipal and Assam for the wild tea plant : returned to England, 1847 : F.R.S., 1829 : F.R.A.S. : Fellow and Vice-President of the Linnaean Society : wrote botanical papers in the various scientific Journals : died in London, April 28, 1854.

WALPOLE, SIR HORATIO GEORGE (1843–)

Born Sept. 9, 1843 : son of Rt. Hon. Spencer Walpole, Q.C. : for some time Home Secretary : educated at Eton : entered the India Office : has been Assistant Under Secretary of State for India since 1883 : Clerk to the Council : Secy, to Royal Commission on Civil Establishments, 1886–90 : C.B., 1880: K.C.B., 1892 : J. P.

WALPOLE, SIR ROBERT (1808–1876)

Son of Thos. Walpole, StagburyPark : born Dec. 1, 1808 : educated at Ealing and Eton : entered the Army in 1825 : served in Nova Scotia : D.A.Q.M.G. : at Corfu, 1847–56, and went to India with the Rifle Brigade in 1857 : com- manded a Brigade at Cawnpur under Windham, and under Sir Colin Campbell on Dec. 6 : commanded a Division at the siege and capture of Lucknow in March, 1858 : in Rohilkund, 1858–9, was over- matched and defeated at Fort Ruiya on April 15, 1858 : was continued in his command : victorious at AUahganj, Bareli, Malerghat : commanded the Lucknow Division, 1861 : at Gibraltar and Chatham : C.B. and K.C.B., 1859 : Lt-General, 1871 : died July 12, 1876.

WALSH, JOHN (1725?–1795)

Son of Joseph Walsh : born about 1725 : joined the E. I. Co.'s military service : Private Secretary to Clive (q.v.), 1757, and with him in Bengal : laid Clive's plans for government of Bengal before Pitt, 1759 : M.P. for Worcester, 1761–80 : F.R.S., 1770 : F.S.A., 1771 : investigated the properties of the torpedo fish : died March 9, 1795.

WARBURTON, SIR ROBERT (1842–1899)

Son of Lt-Colonel Robert Warburton, R.A., and an Afghan lady, niece of the Amir Dost Muhammad (q.v.) : born in Afghanistan, July 11, 1842 : educated at Mussoorie, Kensington, Addiscombe, Woolwich : to India in the Royal Artillery, 1862 : served in the 21st Panjab Infantry in the Abyssinian campaign. 1868 : appointed to the Panjab Commission, 1870; Political Officer in the Khyber, 1879–97 : under Sir R. O. Bright (q.v.), 1879–80 : raised the Khyber Rifles : had great influence with the frontier Afghans : C.S.I., 1890 : Brevet-Colonel, 1893 : resigned, 1897 : served in the Tirah expedition, 1897–8 : K.C.I.E., 1898 : died April 22, 1899 : wrote Eighteen years in the Khyber, published in 1900.

WARD, FRANCIS SWAIN (1760?–1794)

Artist and soldier : born in London about 1750 : gained some reputation a
