I cannot pretend to hope that the book, simple as it is, will be found to be free from all error; for what book is there, let it be prepared by as eminent a sinologist as you like, but in which a few hours search will discover not a few mistakes? If this pamphlet will prove as useful to a beginner in the Hakka Dialect as its prototype (Giles' Hand-book of Swatow) proved to me, in my commencement of the study of the Swatow dialect, the labour spent on it will not have been of no avail.
