of Southwark parish, Surry county, was
burgess for Surry in 1 710- 171 2 and 1727-
1734. He died about 1737, leaving a wife
Rebecca and children William, John and
Mary Simmons. A John Simmons was bur-
gess for Isle of Wight county in 1734-1740,
1742-1747 and 1748-1749. He was probably
father of Benjamin Simmons, who was bur-
gess for Southampton county in 1 758-1761,
1 761 -1 765 and 1 766- 1 768.
Simpson, Southey, was a burgess for Ac- comac in 1761-1765, 1766-1768, 1769-1771, 1772-1774, and a member of the convention of May, 1776.
Skaife, Rev. John, son of John Skaife, • husbandman, was born at Ledburgh, York- shire, schooled at Ledburgh. alumnus of St. John's College, Cambridge, came to Vir- ginia about 1708. and was rector of the par- ish of Stratton Major, King and Queen county, till his death November 3, 1736. He married Susanna Peachy Walker, widow of Thomas Walker, of King and Queen.
Skelton, Reuben, was son of James Skel- ton of Essex county, Virginia, who con- tracted to rebuild the capitol in Williams- burgh and died in 1754. Reuben Skelton was clerk of St. Paul's parish, Hanover county, and member of the house of bur- gesses in 1758, 1759. He died before 1760. He married Elizabeth Lomax, who married (secondly) John Wayles, of Charles City county, father-in-law of Thomas Jefiferson.
Skipwith, Sir Grey, was the son of Sir licnry Skii)with, of "Prestwould," in Leices- tershire, and being a royalist came to \'ir- ginia about 1650. He settled in Middlesex county, Virginia, of which he was one of the justices. He was father of Sir William
Skipwith, who married Sarah, daughter of
John Peyton, of (Gloucester county. A sis-
ter, Diana, married Major Edward Dale, of
Lancaster county.
Skyren, Henry, was born in Whitehaven, ^\!ngland, in 1729, came to X^irginia in 1763, and was minister of St. John's parish, King William county. In 1790 he removed to Hampton, and died there in 1795. He man- ned Lucy Moore, daughter of Colonel Ber- nard M'jore and his wife Anne Catherine Spotswood. He was father of Colonel John Spotswood Skyren, of King William county.
Slaughter, Francis, son of Colonel Robert Slaughter (q. v.j, was born in Culpeper, about 1730. Served in the French and In- dian wars as lieutenant-colonel of militia, and represented Dunmore county in the house of burgesses in 1772, 1773, 1774, I775- He married Miss Suggett.
Slaughter, Robert, son of Robert Slaugh- ter, born in Essex county 1702. Died in Culpeper county in 1768; commissioned captain of militia on September 2, 1729; later colonel of militia. He was vestryman and churchwarden of St. Marks parish, 1730, member of the house of burgesses 1742; presiding justice for Orange county 1745. He was well known for his fine im- ported horses, lie married, about 1723, Mary Smith, daughter of Augustine Smith, of Essex.
Slaughter, Thomas, son of Robert Slaugh- ter (q. v.), was commissioned in 1756 as lieutenant-colonel of the forces for Culpeper county against the Indians above Winches- ter. He was burgess for Culpeper in 1756- 1758, and though elected to the assembly of
