sentatives. In 1825 he resigned his position,
and was appointed judge of the eastern dis-
trict of Virginia. He was in Congress again
from 1827 to 1830, was president of the
Virginia constitutional convention and
chairman of the judiciary committee, and in
1831 was president of the Philadelphia free
trade convention. In 1836 President Jack-
son appointed him an associate judge of the
Supreme Court of the United States. While
in Congress he opposed all appropriations
for public improvements, and all import
duties. He died in Washington, D. C, Feb-
ruary 25. 1841.
