BISHOPS OF CHICHESTER.

1070 Stigand^s, iJiQ King's chaplain, was appointed by the

5 Will. I. King at Whitsuntide 1070. He removed his seat

from Selsey to Chichester about the year 1085'^'^, and

became the first bishop of Chichester '^o. He died in

108741.

1087 William (according to the Hsts in Malmesbury and I Will. II. Florence) succeeded, but according to other au- thorities

1088 Godfrey 4- succeeded Stigand in the see of Chichester, I Will. II. and died in the same year^-^ ; after whose decease the

see was vacant nearly three years, when 1 09 1 Ralph de Luffa was appointed to it-**. He died 14th 4 Will. II. Dec. 1 1 25, and was buried in Chichester cathedral in the passage before St. Mary's chapel, where there was formerly a plain stone bearing these words, " Radulfus Episcopus cognomine Luffa." 1 125 Seffride or Sigefrid, ahhot of Glastonbury '^^, was no- 25 Hen. I. rainated by the King in 1 125*^, and was consecrated by William archbishop of Canterbiuy 12th April in that year*?. He was deposed in 1145, and died in ii5i*. 1 148 Hilary was nominated to the bishopric of Chichester 13 Steph. in 114649^ and consecrated by command of the Pope in 1 148 ^*^. He died in 1 169^1. The see was void about four years.
