184a AsiruRST Turner Gilbert, the present bishop, was gVict. nominated to this see 22nd Jan. 1842, elected 3rd Feb., and the royal assent to his election given 9th Feb. He was confirmed 26th Feb., consecrated the next day36^ ^j^^j ^\^q temporalities were restored to him 1 8th March. The bishopric is rated for first fruits at 677?. is. ^d.^"^ The arms of the see are blazoned thus : Azure, a pres- byter John sitting on a tombstone, in his left hand a mound, his right hand extended, or, with a linen mitre on his head, and in his mouth a sword, all proper.

made bishop of this see in 1 180^+. Matthew, of Chichester, 1180^^. Nicholas de Aquila, about 1190^^. He is said to

have been made bishop of Chichester in 1 209 ; but
