ceased. lie was 1416 made archdeacon of Canterbury, which he vacated by death in 1420. Robert Gilbert, S.T.P., collated 31st Oct. 1420; in 1436 he was made bishop of London.

William Ascoigh, installed joth Nov. 1436, vice Gil- bert; he resigned in 1438.

Nicholas Dixon, collated 29th July 1438. He died 30th Oct. 1448.

John - BRETON, collated 2nd Nov. 1448. lie died 6th \]>ril 1465, and was buried in the cathedral.

John Chedworth, installed 1 1 th April 1465. He died in 147 1 .

JohnRoding, LL.B., collated 6th Aug. 1471. He died in 14S1, being also archdeacon of Lincoln.

Richard Lavyndeb, B.D., collated 6th Nov., and in- stalled by proxy 9th of the same month 14S1. He died in 1507, being archdeacon of Leicester.

William Smith, LL.D., collated 18th Feb., and instal- led 23rd Feb. 1507-8. lie died in 1528, being arch- deacon of Lincoln.

Richard Pates, installed 22nd June 1528. He was likewise archdeacon of Lincoln, but dispossessed of both on attainder by Henry VIII.

Richard Cox, S.T.P., afterwards teshop of Ely, was pre- sented by the King 3rd June, and installed nth June 1542. He surrendered up this noble prebend in 1547, since which time it has never been possessed by any ; for, though by some pretended defect in the surrender, the three persons following took a title out to it, yet they were never able to recover any thing back again, or justify their claims.

George Heath is said to have been presented by the Crown in 1643.

Hugh Barcroft, S.T.P., was, on the Crown's title, in- stalled 17 th June 1 66 1.

Thomas Staxhope, A.M., collated 25th Nov. 1669, vice Barcroft deceased, but without advantage to them- selves or the church ; and so the recovery of it has never been attempted since. vol. 11. f f
